Learn the Ancient Art of Flintknapping

There are few opportunities today to experience a craft that has been practiced for thousands of years. Through hands-on instruction with Joel Robinson, students are invited to step into the world of flintknapping and discover the patience, skill, and craftsmanship required to transform raw stone into finished works of art.

Whether you are completely new to the craft or looking to expand your existing knowledge, these workshops offer a unique learning experience that combines traditional techniques, practical instruction, and a deeper appreciation for the artistry behind every handcrafted piece.

For Joel, flintknapping is more than a skill. It is a lifelong passion and a family legacy. Introduced to the craft by his father, Robbie Robinson, at a young age, Joel continues to honor that tradition by sharing his knowledge with others and helping keep this remarkable art form alive for future generations.

Why Learn Flintknapping?

Flintknapping is the process of shaping stone through carefully controlled strikes and pressure techniques. It requires patience, observation, steady hands, and an understanding of how natural materials respond during the shaping process.

Each stone presents its own challenges and possibilities. As students learn to work with different materials, they begin to understand not only the technical side of the craft, but also the artistry, problem-solving, and attention to detail behind every finished piece.

Whether your interest comes from history, art, collecting, outdoor skills, or simple curiosity, these workshops provide a rare opportunity to learn directly from an experienced flintknapper in a hands-on environment.

Workshop Options

Beginner Workshop

The beginner workshop is designed for students with little or no previous experience. Instruction includes safety practices, tool use, stone selection, and the basic techniques used to begin shaping stone by hand.

Participants will gain a practical understanding of the process while creating a simple stone point under guided instruction. No previous experience is required.

Intermediate Workshop

The intermediate workshop is intended for students who already have some familiarity with flintknapping and want to continue developing their skills.

Instruction may focus on improving symmetry, refining edges, pressure flaking, material selection, and troubleshooting common challenges encountered during the shaping process.

Private Instruction

Private lessons provide a personalized learning experience tailored to your individual goals, interests, and skill level.

Whether you are seeking focused instruction on specific techniques or prefer one-on-one guidance, private workshops offer the flexibility to learn at your own pace.

What Students Will Learn

Every workshop emphasizes safety, patience, and respect for both the craft and the materials being used. Students will learn how to recognize workable stone, understand how different materials behave, and apply techniques that gradually transform raw stone into finished points and artistic pieces.

  • Basic flintknapping safety and tool handling
  • Stone selection and material behavior
  • Percussion flaking techniques
  • Pressure flaking and edge refinement
  • Shaping, finishing, and troubleshooting
  • Patience, observation, and respect for the material

Beyond the technical skills, students gain a deeper appreciation for the time, focus, and craftsmanship required to create handcrafted stone artwork.

Who Can Attend?

Workshops are open to beginners, hobbyists, artists, collectors, history enthusiasts, craftspeople, and anyone interested in learning more about traditional stoneworking techniques.

No prior experience is necessary for beginner workshops. Private instruction can be customized for students at different skill levels.

Because flintknapping involves sharp stone edges and specialized tools, age requirements and safety guidelines may apply. Please contact Joel Robinson Stoneworks for additional information regarding participation and workshop availability.

Keeping a Tradition Alive

Every craft survives because someone chooses to pass it forward.

Joel Robinson learned flintknapping from his father, Robbie Robinson, who believed that traditional skills should be preserved, practiced, and shared. Today, Joel continues that legacy by teaching others the patience, precision, and craftsmanship involved in shaping stone by hand.

Each workshop is more than a lesson. It is an opportunity to experience a tradition that has connected generations through creativity, skill, and respect for the craft.
